My Son Just Turned One, And It’s Made Me Reflect On The Past Year
A year ago if you had told me I would be running for Town council, I would have laughed and said yeah, right. When we were growing up you didn’t talk about politics, religion, or sex and I’ve kept to that most of my adult life.
Then a cell tower suddenly went up in my backyard and my neighbors and I were surprised by it.
So I started watching the Board meetings on Zoom. I was amazed that the focus wasn’t on essential issues like clean water, road repair, parks and fields that are safe and useable, reliable infrastructure with choices, and so on.
I was angry with the lack of transparency from this Board: one meeting ended with the Board about to ban outdoor boilers — only to attend the next meeting and find out there is no ban, but merely a time period when they can’t be used, May to October. A time when no boiler is needed.
With no work sessions made public, it is still unclear how or why the Board changed their minds on this legislation. This lack of transparency is a huge concern and the main reason I am running.
The Town Board needs professionalism and structure: following Robert’s Rules of Order would be a good start — so the rights of town residents and the Board members to speak and be heard is etched in stone — with work sessions between stated meetings, so it is clear how decisions are being made.
The town council represents and works for the people, no one should be kept in the dark or out of the loop. Residents should not have to guess how and why decisions affecting their lives and family are made. It should be there, on the record.
I want my children to have a wonderful childhood here (it’s one of the reasons we moved here). I love that my friends from elementary, middle, and high school are still my best friends.
I love that we can go hiking, fishing, and camping in our backyard. I love that so many of my childhood friends feel the same and are now our neighbors. Nothing is more fun than watching our kids play together.
I want to make sure that as our children grow up they can enjoy all our rural community has to offer. That they can play with their friends in safe playgrounds and fields. That they can become artists or musicians and find outlets for all of their creative needs through the wonderful programming of our parks and recreation.
I want our roads relatively free from pot holes, our lakes are protected. I want all local residents to have access to clean water, with regularly maintained and improved infrastructure.
Most of all, I want our neighbors and all town residents to feel listened to and heard, as well as feel safe and welcome here.
These are the basics of quality of life. We need to get the focus back on that.
Has the Lewisboro Town Board applied for the new clean water money that Governor Cuomo’s office just made available?
Various communities have availed themselves of the grants (Lewisboro is not listed as one of them) and there is still money available, but there are deadlines!
If the Town Board hasn’t applied, will they? Does the newly created grant committee have the expertise to draft applications that really explain the dire need for clean water sources in Lewisboro?
Clean, safe drinking water is a basic human right. This board has been promising upgrades to fix water issues since 2018, but each time a test is done the results are worst than the last. The recent independent test completed on 6/8/2021 shows that the lead results are 15x higher than what is legal. It should be noted that, legal does not equal safe. The current levels that are considered safe have not been updated by the EPA in years.
What also concerns me is that our town’s water failed the February and May 2021 tests for PFAS levels — but it’s June 26th and the residents still haven’t been notified.
Why is the board holding back this information? Why isn’t the board putting out a RFP for an independent study from an engineering firm that isn’t Delaware Engineering (who has been the only one benefitting from a broken system for years now). The residents deserve to know what the solution is, and how much it would cost to implement — so they can make an educated decision as to how the water district can be improved once and for all.
We need elected officials who are aware of quality of life issues and who understand that town taxes can’t pay for everything. And someone in local government needs to take the initiative to go after state and federally funded grants for our community.
Father’s Day
Father’s Day… We are so blessed to have both my father and father-in-law still with us. What is better than watching them with our children?
Teaching them the way they taught us, showing them unconditional love, making them laugh… it has been so fun to watch these two with Georgi and Nico.
Luckily Marc had the best role model and has become such a wonderful father. It’s an amazing journey we are on and we are grateful for the fathers in our lives and hearts.
